Oshie’s Moment
I couldn’t imagine even attempting to control the wave of emotion that is scoring a hat trick a day after your father passes away. From what I’ve gleaned, Tim “Coach” Oshie touched the lives of many inside the game of hockey. He suffered from Alzheimers as his son’s NHL career progressed and per TJ, his father was unable to remember much as the disease worsened over time. One of my favorite scenes in all of sports was watching TJ Oshie hoist up The Stanley Cup as his father Tim stood right next to him, overcome with excitement that his son was a World Champion - a moment TJ guaranteed his father would remember forever.
Regardless of whether you follow the sport or not, it’s one of those stories that’ll hit home with any person willing to absorb it. It’s one of those stories that deserve to be told for eternity. To have your Father by your side during the peak of your success, the golden endgame of every athletes hard work… it’s a moment few get the opportunity to experience. An acquaintance of mine celebrated with the Washington Capitals the night of winning The Stanley Cup. At one moment during the nights festivities, he fortunately found himself inside the same elevator as TJ Oshie. “Oshie had tears in his eyes, smiling from ear-to-ear; As if every emotion hit him at once,” he said.
Rest in peace, “Coach” Oshie.
